Athens Intersection is a Cultural Program focused on bringing contemporary societies close to the values of the arts and culture. Rooted on APART's experience in creating international cultural events of extensive participation and engagement, Athens-Intersection creates actual opportunities for international artists to bond with the local art community and create meaningful connections with the urban environment, it's architecture.
Fuelling longstanding bonds between the Arts, Culture and Contemporary societies during times of tension and disruption.
Athens Intersection 2020 presented •
14 Exhibitions •
4 Performances in •
3 Areas in Athens •
3 Buildings with the participation of •
116 International Artists and •
16 International Curators.
Although the majority of APART's 2020 Athens Intersection agenda had been carefully scheduled, the worldwide epidemic unexpectedly disrupted the “normality” of everyday life, forcing new concerns and priorities. As societies entered into rapid changes, so did the art world respond to the new living and working conditions. Consequently, the 2020 program was deeply influenced by the evolving situation which introduced changes and new practices in materialising the events. As a result, the exhibitions were enriched by many new and emerging art concepts that became part of a large tank expressing the voices of the artists and the public.
Enhanced with new artwork and international participations, with the valuable Support / Auspices of the
Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports,
the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the
Ministry of Culture of Austria, the Auspices of the
City of Athens and other collaborating bodies, APART utilised a highly demanding program for Athens Intersection 2020.
Athens Intersection 2020 completed its artistic exploration having engaged with three of the most vibrant and emblematic neighborhoods of Athens, from Exarchia to the Commercial Triangle, ending in Plaka.
The program was showcased in three entities:

☱ Resides and works in Athens
40 Eressou Str., 10681, Exarchia
28.2 - 13.3.2020
A three-storey house in the heart of Exarcheia in Athens, becomes the field of action for a group of artists who explore and transmute their environments as sites of psychic-mental processes and states of affectedness (disorders, traumas, oscillations, modes of recovering and rebalancing), through the use of photography, video and sound.
The artists involved in the project all reside and work in Athens. In their fragmented everyday life, they inexorably yield to “multitasking”, in full accord with the dominant socio-economic and behavioral model of their era. Their daily activity is split into diverse forms of production. They live as internal "nomads" moving amidst a closed existential landscape of multiple ever-changing speeds and imploded time. Every once in a while they slow down unexpectedly. They pause, set up their equipment to "document". They abandon the prey for the shade. The selection and arrangement of their works as a unity did not result from topic-based criteria (such as: the city, art in public space, urban culture etc.), but from a purely ergo-centric approach, emerging from the specificity of each individual work of art. All works involve projections on two-dimensional surfaces, forming a mosaic-like overall composition, rich in morphological and contextual qualities, textures, sensitivities, tonal values, degrees of introvertedness/extrovertedness, varying significantly in each project.
Participating artists: Vicky Betsou, Vera Chotzoglou, Taxiarchis Diamantopoulos, Christina Dimakogianni, Gabriella Gerolemou, Yannis Karpouzis, Marietta Kavvadia, Vladimir Necakov, Alfredo Pechuan, Michaelangelo Vlassis-Ziakas.
Work group: Georg Georgakopoulos, Vicky Betsou, George Harvalias, Dimitris Ginosatis

A Modular exhibition on faith, disbelief and other miracles
We are set within the hub of ecclesiastical requisites in Athens, surrounded by church supplies and other ceremonial items used in rituals. Shop fronts with a variety of vestments and liturgical objects and other products of purpose, some of which have not yet assumed a ritualistic functionality, subject the visitor to an atmosphere of impressions and associations.
Faith or trust, Devotion or Obsession. We must express this thought in an earthly and ordinary sense: Can we act upon distinguished situations of great importance, before they develop as such? Can we embrace, that which is potentially "Grand" and "Majestic"? Do we reject it in feeling of empathy, out of fear of losing oneself to a state of inferiority? Do we mistakenly turn to defend ourselves by performing exorcisms with protection charms, gemstones, amulets and other types of applied magic? Do we "spit behind us" as a custom tradition to protect against the evil eye, or do we "throw a black stone behind us”, so as never to see it again?
Unanswered questions with an infinity of interpretations. 22 stories, 22 artists develop their artwork and installations in the rooms and spaces of a 3-storey residential building, that later housed local workshops and businesses with church supplies and utilities.
Participating artists: Nikos Artemis, Eleanna Balesi, Kostas Bassanos, Dimosthenis Bogiatzis, Katerina Botsari, Sotiris Fokeas, Vasilis Galanis, Vangelis Gokas, Babis Karalis, Markela Kontaratou, Dimitris Kontodimos, Kostas Lales, Natalia Manta, Despoina Pantazi, Nina Papaconstantinou, Nikos Papadimitriou, Amo Soy, Kleopatra Tsali, Kostas Tsolis, Andreas Vousouras, Dimitri Yin.
