June 29 - July 3 2022

In November and December of 2021, APART held in person meetings with young curators and artists in three European cities, Athens, Hamburg and Vienna.
The purpose of the meetings was to discuss an entity of exhibitions that will examine the symptoms and impact of the significant restructurings that have occurred in recent years of the crises, as perceived by young curators and artists.

The results of the meetings are four group exhibitions by four young curators and artists from Greece, Germany and Austria. The project aims to present different yet coinciding views on common problems, conclusions and solutions of a generation that emerged in the arena of arts in the vortex of the crises during the last decade.

⚡ Back to Athens 9 | 2022. No Apocalypse Now, a review

☱ Back to Athens 10 Years ☱
June 29 - July 3 2022

This year 's edition of Back to Athens proposes a re-turn to an allegorical interpretation of Athens.
To simple yet fundamental values and social structures, by revisiting democracy and other influential practices and documents from Plato and Aristotle, to Locke, Rousseau and Kant. Not with the intent of embracing past references, but in relation to the possible development of new social contracts of emerging societies and their future coexistence. 10 curatorial exhibitions and 100 artists and curators aim to provide a comprehensive documentation of the artistic ideas and views, an outlook on the recent trends and projects collected from the past year.

No Humans Allowed is organised by APART Art Research and Applications
Curated by Georg Georgakopoulos, Fotini Kapiris, Christian Rupp

"The most notable achievements of the last decade may pass unnoticed,
mainly because we focus on those possibilities most unlikely to succeed,
and less on what can be realized in the near future.
That which has changed, was the least expected – and it is without doubt, our perspectives on the future…"

(excerpt from the prologue of Sir Arthur Clarke’s book, 1961)

Back to Athens 8 | 2021 International Art Festival entitled "Profiles of the Future: An inquiry into the limits of the possible" borrows from the homonymous title of Sir Arthur Clarke's book, 1962), so as to manifest the ideas and proposals of the art community in response to a critical 12-month period of ambiguity and conflict, as experienced both individually and collectively. As post-pandemic societies will face the ‘new normal’, it not expected that we will recover to pre-crisis conditions. Though we stand before rapid transformations, little is certain. What will change and to what extent? Certainly, our perspectives on the future. The festival declares the artist as an “wonderous, autonomous machine", privileged to imagine and develop through personal practice and experimentation, the most unordinary and unique artwork that may interpret the present issues and conditions, and share these findings with the public. Back to Athens emerged at the beginning of the crisis in 2012, providing vital insight on the issues and concerns of the art community, while leaving conclusions to rest on interpretation.

Back to Athens 8 | 2021 is curated by: Georg Georgakopoulos, Fotini Kapiris, Christian Rupp, organized by APART Art Research and Applications, under the Auspices of the City of Athens, with the support of the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the Ministry of Culture of Austria, Zoia, Athens Intersection Cultural Program, CHEAPART, and the Offspring Young Artists Program.
Back to Athens International Arts Festival has been active within the wider area of Kotzia Square in Athens (2012-2014), at the historic square of Exarchia district (2016 – 2017), the Athens Commercial Triangle in 2018, and in 2021 in the emblematic “Isaiah” Mansion in Patission.

Athens Intersection Cultural Program 2017 - 2020

Athens Intersection is a Cultural Program focused on bringing contemporary societies close to the values of the arts and culture. Rooted on APART's experience in creating international cultural events of extensive participation and engagement, Athens-Intersection creates actual opportunities for international artists to bond with the local art community and create meaningful connections with the urban environment, it's architecture.

☱ Athens Intersection 2020

Fuelling longstanding bonds between the Arts, Culture and Contemporary societies during times of tension and disruption.

Athens Intersection 2020 presented • 14 Exhibitions4 Performances in • 3 Areas in Athens3 Buildings with the participation of • 116 International Artists and • 16 International Curators.
Although the majority of APART's 2020 Athens Intersection agenda had been carefully scheduled, the worldwide epidemic unexpectedly disrupted the “normality” of everyday life, forcing new concerns and priorities. As societies entered into rapid changes, so did the art world respond to the new living and working conditions. Consequently, the 2020 program was deeply influenced by the evolving situation which introduced changes and new practices in materialising the events. As a result, the exhibitions were enriched by many new and emerging art concepts that became part of a large tank expressing the voices of the artists and the public.

Enhanced with new artwork and international participations, with the valuable Support / Auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the Ministry of Culture of Austria, the Auspices of the City of Athens and other collaborating bodies, APART utilised a highly demanding program for Athens Intersection 2020.
Athens Intersection 2020 completed its artistic exploration having engaged with three of the most vibrant and emblematic neighborhoods of Athens, from Exarchia to the Commercial Triangle, ending in Plaka. The program was showcased in three entities:

☱ Resides and works in Athens

40 Eressou Str., 10681, Exarchia
28.2 - 13.3.2020

A three-storey house in the heart of Exarcheia in Athens, becomes the field of action for a group of artists who explore and transmute their environments as sites of psychic-mental processes and states of affectedness (disorders, traumas, oscillations, modes of recovering and rebalancing), through the use of photography, video and sound.
The artists involved in the project all reside and work in Athens. In their fragmented everyday life, they inexorably yield to “multitasking”, in full accord with the dominant socio-economic and behavioral model of their era. Their daily activity is split into diverse forms of production. They live as internal "nomads" moving amidst a closed existential landscape of multiple ever-changing speeds and imploded time. Every once in a while they slow down unexpectedly. They pause, set up their equipment to "document". They abandon the prey for the shade. The selection and arrangement of their works as a unity did not result from topic-based criteria (such as: the city, art in public space, urban culture etc.), but from a purely ergo-centric approach, emerging from the specificity of each individual work of art. All works involve projections on two-dimensional surfaces, forming a mosaic-like overall composition, rich in morphological and contextual qualities, textures, sensitivities, tonal values, degrees of introvertedness/extrovertedness, varying significantly in each project.

Participating artists: Vicky Betsou, Vera Chotzoglou, Taxiarchis Diamantopoulos, Christina Dimakogianni, Gabriella Gerolemou, Yannis Karpouzis, Marietta Kavvadia, Vladimir Necakov, Alfredo Pechuan, Michaelangelo Vlassis-Ziakas.
Work group: Georg Georgakopoulos, Vicky Betsou, George Harvalias, Dimitris Ginosatis

The exhibition "Resides and works in Athens" is organized by APART Art Research and Applications , collaborating organisation CHEAPART Athens, as a part of the Cultural Program "Αθήνα-Σημεία Τομής 2020/Athens-Intersection 2020" supported by and under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports

A Modular exhibition on faith, disbelief and other miracles

We are set within the hub of ecclesiastical requisites in Athens, surrounded by church supplies and other ceremonial items used in rituals. Shop fronts with a variety of vestments and liturgical objects and other products of purpose, some of which have not yet assumed a ritualistic functionality, subject the visitor to an atmosphere of impressions and associations.
Faith or trust, Devotion or Obsession. We must express this thought in an earthly and ordinary sense: Can we act upon distinguished situations of great importance, before they develop as such? Can we embrace, that which is potentially "Grand" and "Majestic"? Do we reject it in feeling of empathy, out of fear of losing oneself to a state of inferiority? Do we mistakenly turn to defend ourselves by performing exorcisms with protection charms, gemstones, amulets and other types of applied magic? Do we "spit behind us" as a custom tradition to protect against the evil eye, or do we "throw a black stone behind us”, so as never to see it again? Unanswered questions with an infinity of interpretations. 22 stories, 22 artists develop their artwork and installations in the rooms and spaces of a 3-storey residential building, that later housed local workshops and businesses with church supplies and utilities.

Participating artists: Nikos Artemis, Eleanna Balesi, Kostas Bassanos, Dimosthenis Bogiatzis, Katerina Botsari, Sotiris Fokeas, Vasilis Galanis, Vangelis Gokas, Babis Karalis, Markela Kontaratou, Dimitris Kontodimos, Kostas Lales, Natalia Manta, Despoina Pantazi, Nina Papaconstantinou, Nikos Papadimitriou, Amo Soy, Kleopatra Tsali, Kostas Tsolis, Andreas Vousouras, Dimitri Yin.

APART launches The Culture Channel

APART expands it's reach to the creative community, initiating the online platform theculturechannel.com, with focus on research, documentation and the promotion of contemporary art and expression through original audio-visual material. It is an online “channel” through which members of the creative community answer to issues of concern, while introducing their work to the wide public, beyond national borders.
theculturechannel space hosts selected exhibitions, events by artists, curators and organisations. The culturechannel opens with the project 20 Artists-20 Stories | 10 Kuenstler-20 Geschichten" supported by the Austrian Embassy in Athens

Ongoing Video Interviews introduce the work of 20 Greek and Austrian Artists
and their view on the effects of the pandemic

The arts field relies on physical presence and is complete only through the interaction between artist and viewer. This relationship lost cannot be replaced by technology, yet it can provide an audiovisual documentation of artist's images and thoughts in the form of a prototype dictionary - archive. With this in hand, the viewer can look back to the artist and his work, explore new perspectives and form new bonds with the work and its underlying ideas. The pandemic may be cause for us to realise that we are all part of this unprecedented situation, as we share the same questions and concerns, and encounter the same difficulties.

20 Artists from Greece and Austria are the backbone of this dictionary. Individual video interviews on their work provide insight as to how the present conditions have affected their practice, and the developments they believe will emerge in the near future.

Participating artists: Francis Ruyter, Olga Georgieva, Jeremias Altmann, Lena Lapschina, Peter Fritzenwallner, Luiza Margan, Julian Palacz, Olivier Hoelzl, Karin Maria Pfeiffer, Veronika Schubert, Vasilis Galanis, Babis Karalis, Kostas Lales, Natalia Manta, Dimosthenis Bogiatzis, Katerina Botsari, Amo Soy, Kleopatra Tsali, Sotiris Fokeas, Andreas Voussouras.

Eleni Lyra: Market (Agora)

Varvakios Central Meat Market, Athens

APART collaborates with Art historian and Curator Dr. Stratis Pantazis and artist Eleni Lyra for the presentation of Lyra's solo exhibition entitled Agora. The exhibition is realised with the support of the J. F. Costopoulos Foundation, at the Athens Varvakios Meat Market.

For the artist, the Varvakios Market building functions as a pictorial simulation of the concept of the world market, the place where the drama of man will unfold. Its architecture, with its arcades, high ceilings and domes, combined with its current function, creates to Lyra the same awe and emotional charge as a Baroque cathedral. Furthermore, taking into consideration the current function and the history of the space and the surrounding area, Lyra creates two site-specific photographic installations with children, which are occupied by intense theatricality, drama and more generally Baroque aesthetics. By adopting elements of the past and by having them “filtered” through contemporary and non-contemporary techniques and means of expression, she manages to touch upon issues of today. Time, light, sound and smell are important factors that affect both the interpretation and reading of the works and the viewer's perception. Factors, who in combination with the power and aesthetics of Lyra’s works, transform an ordinary visit to the Varvakios Meat Market into a unique experience for each of us. It becomes an allegorical wandering and a journey into the labyrinth of globalization and money to discover our lost innocence of childhood and in saving our wounded soul.

Warm thanks to Mr. Tsironis, Presesident of the Union of the Varvakios Market Butchers.
"Market" exhibition by Eleni Lyra is realised with the kind support of The J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, Under the Auspices of The City of Athens, Implemented by APART Art Research and Applications, Media sponsor Culturenow.gr/.

Offspaces International Research Program

Mapping and developing the independent art system

APART launches the Offspaces International Research Program aimed to study and map independent art practice, art spaces and other artist-run and artist-managed groups. The program's platform promotes the development of cutting edge ideas and experimental projects in art, helping to expand on the international network of innovative art activity and off space initiatives. The objective of this program is to establish a strong foundation that can represent these initiatives and create favourable conditions for the production and accommodation of their projects, and further the development of networks and partnerships among participating members.

SYSTEMS / Independent Artists and Groups in Dialogue was the first panel to trace and document the independent contemporary Greek art scene, discussing methodology, artistic practice, and sustainable development goals. Systems took place in June 2012, at the emblematic Athenian cultural venue CAMP! Contemporary Art Meeting Point.

In 2016, Offspaces International extended its research to new generation artists. The challenging and often restrictive conditions surrounding the emerging creative industry as an outcome of the rapidly changing economy and society, inspired the OFFSPRING Young Artists Program. Open to entry level artists, new art groups and young art professionals, the program encourages mobility and provides opportunities for networking through participation and involvement with national and international art spaces, galleries and cultural organisations. Offspring collaborated with the ArtWall Project Space in Athens, Cheapart Athens, Flat 1 Offspace Vienna, Back to Athens Festival.
