Athens Intersection 2020
Contemporary societies during times of anxiety and disruption.
In October of 2020, APART assumes the role of organiser to the Athens Intersection Program, coinciding with the worldwide epidemic that unexpectedly disrupted the “normality” of everyday life. As societies entered into rapid changes, so did the art world respond to the new living and working conditions. Consequently, APART's 2020 agenda was deeply influenced by the evolving situation. New concepts and artistic practices emerged, voicing the issues and concerns of the artists and the public.
Athens Intersection 2020 engaged with three of the most vibrant and emblematic neighbourhoods of Athens, Exarchia - the Commercial Triangle - Plaka. The program was realised with the valuable Support / Auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the Ministry of Culture of Austria, the Auspices of the City of Athens and other collaborating bodies:
Athens Intersection 2020 was realised in three entities:
- In The Name…
9 – 18.10.2020
A Modular exhibition on faith, disbelief and other miracles. Faith or trust, Devotion or Obsession. 22 artists explore the ability to embrace the "Grand" and "Majestic" moments of our life, or the probability of rejecting them in fear of the weight of their significance. Artworks and installations develop within a 3-storey residential building that later housed local workshops and businesses with church supplies and utilities.
- Back to Athens 7 | 2020: μetaΑθήνα / pόστΑθενς
1 - 4.7.2020
Overcoming crises, Athens on the verge of its new identity. Facing a new post-lockdown reality, 100 artists and curators from Greece and abroad reconnect in physical presence with 12 curatorial exhibitions and artistic projects. Back to Athens 2020 is realised under the auspices of the City of Athens with the support of the Austrian Embassy in Athens, the Ministry of Culture of Austria, F.O.T.A. Offspaces International Research Program
Mapping and developing the independent art system
APART launches the Offspaces International Research Program aimed to study and map independent art practice, art spaces and other artist-run and artist-managed groups. The program's platform promotes the development of cutting edge ideas and experimental projects in art, helping to expand on the international network of innovative art activity and off space initiatives. The objective of this program is to establish a strong foundation that can represent these initiatives and create favourable conditions for the production and accommodation of their projects, and further the development of networks and partnerships among participating members.
SYSTEMS / Independent Artists and Groups in Dialogue was the first panel to trace and document the independent contemporary Greek art scene, discussing methodology, artistic practice, and sustainable development goals. Systems took place in June 2012, at the emblematic Athenian cultural venue CAMP! Contemporary Art Meeting Point.
In 2016, Offspaces International extended its research to new generation artists. The challenging and often restrictive conditions surrounding the emerging creative industry as an outcome of the rapidly changing economy and society, inspired the OFFSPRING Young Artists Program. Open to entry level artists, new art groups and young art professionals, the program encourages mobility and provides opportunities for networking through participation and involvement with national and international art spaces, galleries and cultural organisations. Offspring collaborated with the ArtWall Project Space in Athens, CHEAPART Athens, Flat 1 Offspace Vienna, Back to Athens.
